Overview
Standard Bank's involvement in South African cricket at domestic and international level was propelled to new heights with the launch of the Standard Bank Pro20 Series in 2004.
Standard Bank's announcement in September 2005 that it was renewing its sponsorship of SA cricket included a three-year continuation of the Standard Bank Pro20 Series, as well as a new and additional investment in the international Pro20 format.
Delivering a new phenomenon known as "sportainment", the Standard Bank Pro20 Series is a new generation limited-overs tournament, which has added another dimension to domestic cricket in South Africa.
As a strength-versus-strength competition, play is fast and furious, and each match lasts approximately three hours with a feast of tremendous bowling, huge batting sprees and fantastic fielding.
The series targets a much broader and younger spectrum of sports fans as South Africa's finest cricketers have thrilled cricket lovers around the country. The response to this form of the game has been extremely positive and the stage has been set for a new era of exhilarating and competitive cricket.
In 2004, the Goodyear Eagles walked off with the inaugural Pro20 trophy, and in April 2005 the Nashua Titans smashed their way through the series to clinch the title.
In the 2005/6 season, the Standard Bank Pro20 will be played in January and February 2006. Whilst the Proteas play an away tour against Australia over the same time frame, local fans will enjoy a feast of action-packed and competitive cricket at home.
