Franchises CSA (Cricket South Africa) announced that domestic professional cricket would be played by six teams from six franchises. This came into affect in the 2004/2005 season. One of the main reasons for this change is to improve the standard of the domestic game by developing strength-vs-strength cricket. The change has proved a tremendous success as spectators have been treated to exciting matches, as seen in the 2005 Standard Bank Cup.
