11 July to 5
August 2000
Standard Bank
hosted the World Press Photo exhibition for the 10th
consecutive year.
World Press Photo,
now in its 43rd year, attracts thousands of entries annually
from leading photojournalists. It is regarded as the most
prominent international press photography competition. An
independent international jury makes the selections.
The exhibition
presents an overview of the year's news as published in
newspapers and magazines around the world, as well as
unpublished material shown for the first time. Alongside
headline news, current affairs and daily life, diverse
aspects of photojournalism are reflected in the categories
sport, the arts and science and technology. Photographers
from 21 countries won prizes in the 18 competition
categories.
This year's
contest attracted 42 215 pictures submitted by
3 981 photographers from 122 countries. John Hogg of
the Sunday Independent was the only South African
photographer to win acclaim. Hogg won second prize in the
Arts Singles category for his picture Dance Umbrella
Festival, Johannesburg.
World Press Photo
of the Year went to Danish photographer Claus Bjørn
Larsen of the newspaper Berlingske Tidende. His picture,
taken on 5 April 1999, depicts a wounded Kosovo Albanian man
in the streets of Kukës, Albania. The photograph is
also a part of a story, which was awarded third prize in the
category People in the News Stories.
The World Press
Photo Foundation is sponsored worldwide by Canon, KLM Royal
Dutch Airlines and Kodak Professional. The Standard Bank
sponsors the World Press Photo tour in South Africa.
For the fourth
time Standard Bank also sponsored this exhibition at the
William Fehr Collection in The Castle in Cape Town from 15
August to 9 September 2000.
