Traditional
clay vessels and contemporary clay sculptures Imbued with the notion of transforming the earth, clay has been part of human creativity since ancient times. Coiled, cut, constructed, pressed, pinched, pricked, modelled and moulded - the technical variations are infinite. Linked inevitably to function, clay has, however, been part of ritual. Contemporary ideas about gender, the boundaries of art and craft, associated meaning, are all contained within clay and its processes and were explained in the exhibition. Although contemporary works were shown, some historical development was provided by a number of 4th century pots collected in the 1920s from central Africa. The Standard Bank African Art Collection is permanently housed at the University of the Witwatersrand Art Galleries. |
